      The concept of an “eco-city” was introduced in the book Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a Healthy Future by Richard Register. Similar concepts sprouted around the same time, such as ecopolis, sustainable city, carbon-neutral city, garden city, green city and self-sufficient city.
